Around Trichy
Tiruchirappalli was under the influence of cholas from 300 BC. Later on it was ruled by Mahendra Varma Pallava I from 590 AD. In 880 AD, Aditya Chola overtook the Pallavas and Chola rule was reinstated. The struggle for power between the Pallavas and Pandyas continued till 10th century. There was struggle to overtake Tiruchirappalli from various rulers, Mughals, Nayaks of Madurai, the Marathas, the Nawabs of Carnatic, the French and finally the British. Viswanatha Nayak, the first ruler of Nayak dynasty in the 16th century built the present day Teppakulam and the Fort.
Rock Fort Temple
The Rock fort Hillock one of the oldest in the world, is said to be 2300 million years old much older than the himalayas. Inscriptions dating back to the 3rd century B.C is found in the temple at the summit of 83 m high rock.There are two Pallava cave temples that have beautiful sculptures of the 6th and 7th centuries.
Grand Anicut (Kallanai)
Grand Anicut is an ancient dam built by the Chola king Karikalan around the 1st century AD and later on modified by British engineers in 1830.
