Dr. C. Natarajan


 

BRIEF PROFILE

Dr.C.Natarajan got graduated B.E.in Civil Engineering in 1977 and M.E.in Structural Engineering in 1979 from Annamalai University. He received his Ph.D. degree from IIT Madras in 1984.   He is currently Professor in Department of Civil Engineering at NITT.  He has served as the Head of the Department of Civil Engineering from December 2005 to January 2009 and the Dean, Planning and Development of NITT from April 2010 to August 2010. He was also the Chairman, Library committee of NITT from October 2011 to May 2014. From November 2005 to February 2008 he has served as the Chairman, Estate and Works committee of the institute and the nodal officer for TEQIP civil works from July 2005 to January 2010.

During his tenure of the headship the research activities of the department was given as thrust by the motivation of the former Director Prof. Chidambaram. M.Tech. in Environmental Engineering was introduced. Many professors from abroad were invited under TEQIP to collaborate research and deliver lectures, seminars, workshops and conferences. During the tenure of the Chairmanship in the library he had introduced the RFID a unique in automation of library system. As the Chairman of Estate and Works committee he reformed the tender procedure in a flawless manner. He modernized the infrastructure facilities of the institute as a TEQIP Nodal officer.

Dr.Natarajan has set up the Structural Engineering laboratory and the structural Dynamics laboratory at NITT. He, as the founder coordinator, drafted the curriculum for M.E. Structural Engineering started as full Time /Part Time at NITT. He served as the member of the board of studies for various institutions. He has experience in structural design, forensic investigation, and construction of buildings, bridges and special structures. He has made numerous structural investigations, including the accident due to the boiler during erection, roof collapse due to corrosion, the collapse of Highway Bridge and collapse of flying formwork. Other investigations involved the stability of High Court building at Kochi, BPCL building, machine shop building for HAPP, Tiruchy,  proof checking of the structural design of various buildings like office buildings for ONGC at Chennai, and industrial buildings etc. He has investigated the Condition assessment of high way bridges and buildings and suggested the suitable remedial measures for rehabilitation. Dr.Natarajan has testified in Kochi naval base court and in arbitration on the occasions regarding his Air cargo roof design investigation. He has served as the member of the building committee and governing council members for various other institutions.

With three decades of teaching, research and consultancy experience, he has published /presented several research papers in peer reviewed national and International journals/ conferences proceedings. He has conducted an international workshop on Indo US Forensic practices sponsored by the National Science Foundation USA, American Society of Civil Engineers, USA, CSIR and SERC. He is in collaboration with Dr.Shen En Chen, University of North Carolina University at Charlotte, USA. for the various academics and research activities.The proceedings of the first Indo US Forensic Engineering workshop was published by the ASCE, USA. Dr.Natarajan has conducted several training programmes for industry/ institutions. He is the reviewer for reputed journals in his field.

Dr. Natarajan is recipient of many awards for guiding the best M.Tech. Thesis from ISTE, New Delhi, Best Teacher award from NITT, Karikalan award from the BAI, Tiruchy and Mayan awards for recognizing his services in the construction field. 

Dr. Natarajan is very active in professional societies and currently the Chairman of the Indian Concrete Institute, Tiruchy centre and the Treasure of the Indian Society of Public Administration.  He is the editorial member of the International Journal of the Forensic Engineering, Indian Journal of the Earth science and Engineering and International journal of Construction Materials. He has authored a book on “Matrix Methods of structural Analysis- theory and problems”. His research interest includes the Forensic Engineering, health monitoring of structures, condition assessment and rehabilitation of structures, recycling of construction and demolition waste.
