Dr. V.K. Karthika 

Dr. V.K. Karthika is an Assistant Professor of English in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at the National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli. She earned her Master’s degree in TESOL Studies from the University of Leeds, England, United Kingdom after a Master’s in English and Comparative Literature from Pondicherry Central University. She worked in England as an ESOL instructor and assessor for ESOL Examinations from 2009 to 2011 and conducted studies related to language acquisition, cultural adaptation and professional needs of English instructors. During the four years she spent in England as a student and a teacher, she gained insights into the challenges encountered by language learners and the potential remedies that resolve them and polished her understanding of a multicultural, multilingual and multi-ethnic learning and teaching scenario. She obtained her doctorate in English Language Education from the English and Foreign Languages University (EFL-U), Hyderabad, India.

Her teaching philosophy is deeply rooted in her belief that education must be an agent of transformation by enabling its stakeholders to activate social and emotional learning, thus building a better humanity. She offers lectures and sessions on Aviation English (Airports Authority of India -AAI), Translation and Critical Discourse Analysis (National Translation Mission, GoI), Public Speaking Skills (MCRHRD Institute of Telangana), Continuing Professional Development and Teaching and Learning Strategies (TSWREIS and other educational institutions).

Research Overview

V.K. Karthika’s research interests are firmly situated within the field of Second Language Teaching and Learning. She has worked extensively in the area of awareness raising of speaking strategies and examined its impact on the development of oral proficiency in English in a multilingual setting. Her research focuses on various aspects of Second Language Learning including learner motivation, metacognitive awareness, learner strategies, learner autonomy and self-directed learning. Over the span of eight years of her teaching career and during the five years of doctoral research, she carried out a number of classroom researches based on which articles were published in journals of national and international repute. Her research work combined her passions for intercultural understanding, multilingual realities and educational development. She is keen on curriculum development and materials production as well. She works in the area of metacognitive awareness and attempts to understand how motivation and willingness to communicate (WTC) correlate with it. She also explores the possibilities and challenges of EMI in the Indian multilingual context. Dr. V. K. Karthika currently researches in the field of Aviation English and develops materials for training in aeronautical communication.

  • Conducted a one day workshop on interpersonal and communication skills for the children of the Z.P. Government High School, Inavolu, Amaravati on 14 October, 2019.
  • Worked with Association of International Cancer Research and conducted awareness programme on Breast cancer among immigrant women from Asian and African countries in West Yorkshire, England (2008-2009)
  • Offered voluntary service to protect the biodiversity of Adel Moore in West Yorkshire, England (2008)
  • Offered a one-day workshop on English proficiency for the children of fisherman community in the Government High School, Kalapat, using puppet show as a teaching tool, Pondicherry (2007)
  • Worked as a National Service Scheme volunteer of the Baselius College Unit for the Save Water Project through rainwater harvesting in Villoonni, Kottayam (2004)
  • Organised an awareness programme on AIDS and an interactive session with HIV positive persons, Baselius College, Kottayam (2004)
