S.ShanmugamDr. S. Shanmugam who is Professor, on Higher Administrative Grade, of mechanical engineering at National Institute of Technology (formerly known as Regional Engineering College) Tiruchirappalli, Tamilnadu, India has obtained his undergraduate degree, in the year 1983, with honours in mechanical engineering from Coimbatore Institute of Technology, Coimbatore that was under the erstwhile University of Madras, Tamilnadu, India. He subsequently got his postgraduate degree in production engineering from PSG College of Technology Coimbatore in the year 1985, which is now under Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, Tamilnadu, India. He has been lecturer at Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College, Bidar- a premier center of Technical Education in Karnataka for about two years. He then obtained his degree of doctor of philosophy from Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai in the year 1991.
He has more than three decades of research and teaching experience at National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli (NIT), Tamilnadu, India. He has successfully completed few sponsored research projects including a major research project. He has published 97 technical papers in the international journals covering SCI, SCIE, and Scopus, 10 research papers in national journals, and presented 56 in international and national conferences. He has to his credit one patent published in India. His areas of research include design of mechanical components, stress analysis, soft robotics, and solar thermal engineering. He has successfully guided 15 research students for the award of degree of doctor of philosophy and a half a dozen are being guided. He has authored two books published locally, and contributed full chapter in an engineering book published from the USA. He got fellowship and received technical cooperation training in Great Britain for about six months between the years 1995 and 1996. He has participated in more than a dozen conferences/workshops across the country and organized half-a-dozen workshops.
He has served as Dean Academic at National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli. He has served as member of Board of Governors of centrally funded technical institutions including one of National Institutes of Technology. He serves as Senate member of one of NITs besides NIT Tiruchirappalli. He has served as Member of Governing Council of a couple of engineering colleges affiliated to Anna University Chennai and serves in Thiagaraja College of Engineering, Madurai, Tamil Nadu. He has served as coordinator of NIT Puducherry. He has served as member of National Board of Accreditation; as member, nominated by All India Council for Technical Education, of different committees; as member of interview board in different universities and central government organizations; as head of the department of mechanical engineering; as warden of boys’ hostel and deputy chief warden of all hostels; as chairman/member of various committees; and as adviser of students’ activities.
