Shape memory alloys
Ferromagnetic Shape Memory Alloys
Ferromagnetic shape memory alloys (FSMA) are those materials which retain their shape after a structural phase transformation/twin boundary motion with an external magnetic field. The shape memory effect takes place with martensite transition. FSMA could be used in actuators and dampers where strains are controlled by an applied magnetic field. The strains induced will be nearly 10 % with a magnetic field of less than 1 T in some alloys such as Ni-Mn-Ga.
Some other examples of MSMA are Co-Ni-Al, Co-Ni-Ga, Ni-Fe-Ga.
