SC/ST Cell

SC/ST Cell

ABOUT

NIT Trichy aims to create an inclusive and impartial atmosphere for people from various communities. The SC/ST cell is responsible for educating the campus community about the importance of equality and diversity to foster a discrimination-free environment. The cell ensures that the Government of India's reservation policies are implemented for student admissions and staff recruitment at all levels. It collects data on policy implementation, trends, and changes. NIT Trichy takes all accusations of discrimination against SC/ST students, staff, or faculty very seriously, whether it is explicit or implicit. NIT Trichy has implemented several measures to assist SC/ST students, including appointing a senior faculty member as Chairman and a Nodal Officer for SC/ST Cell for executing all activities of the cell.

When India gained independence, it pledged to establish a socially just and equitable society. The Constitution of India, adopted in 1950, recognizes the scheduled castes and scheduled tribes as the two most vulnerable groups requiring special protection. The Constitution has several provisions aimed at eliminating all forms of discrimination and enabling members of these groups to participate equally and freely in public life. The Constitution of India includes specific provisions for the reservation of services in favour of scheduled castes and scheduled tribes. Article 16(4) states that the State may make provisions for the reservation of appointments or posts in favour of any backward class or citizens who are not adequately represented in state services. Article 335 requires the consideration of the claims of scheduled castes and scheduled tribes, along with the maintenance of administrative efficiency, in making appointments to services and posts related to Union or State affairs.
