The IEEE Student Branch of NIT Tiruchirappalli arranged a guest lecture with Dr. Nagi Naganathan as the resource person on Tuesday (3.7.18). Dr. Nagi has a long relationship with the IEEE and is currently the Vice-chair of IEEE Princeton (Central Jersey Section), and Chair of SSCS chapter. Professionally, he works as a Principal Engineer with Broadcom Limited, Allentown. He is also an alumnus of NIT Tiruchirappalli (formerly REC, Trichy) where he graduated in Electrical and Electronics Engineering in 1983.

Dr. Nagi delivered an engaging and inspiring talk on “IEEE and Engineering Projects”. He apprised on various avenues through which the IEEE provides training for the student community to aid them in grasping engineering concepts. The Educational Activities Board(EAB) and the Electronics Devices Society (EDS) play an active role in roping in pre-university as well as graduate students to come forward with their ideas and implement them using the training kits provided by IEEE. To imbibe social responsibility, the Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS) in IEEE funds and supports students to envision, develop, and install technologies that meet individual and social needs in their local communities around the world. He also shared inner details of a number of projects with social relevance that received the financial grant from EPICS in IEEE. This turned out to be the riveting aspect of the talk which caught the attention and interest of faculty and students alike. The audience were highly motivated to take up such projects through which they can refine and apply their technical skills for the upliftment of the rural society.

Special Lecture By IEEE Student Branch

Topic: Tutorial on active power filter design using MATLAB

External Speaker: Dr.P.Karuppanan (Asst. Professor, Department of ECE, MNNIT, Allahabad.)
Internal Speaker: Dr.P.Raja (Assoc Professor, Department of EEE, NIT, Tiruchirappalli)
Venue: Computer lab, Department of EEE
Date & Time: 12.07.2018, 2:00 to 5:00 pm

The IEEE Student Branch of NIT Tiruchirappalli arranged a Special Lecture on MATLAB. Dr. P.Raja, Assoc Professor, Department of EEE, NIT, Tiruchirappalli started the first session with brief introduction about the MATLAB and its uses followed by a practical demonstration of different toolboxes. A topic briefing step by step modeling of a simple DC motor right from the mathematical equation to a well-built Matlab model gave the students proper understating and confidence for their future projects

Following the one hour first session the second session on Active Power Filter (APF) design by Dr.P.Karuppanan. Asst. Professor, Department of ECE, MNNIT, Allahabad, started with basic explanations about power quality and solutions. He then elaborated on Active Power Filters and their design methodologies. The complete MATLAB simulation model for designing the active power filters was taught. The explanation of the controller block and the Butterworth filter designing really helped students to relate and understand the theoretical concepts and their practical applications. A simple Voltage Source Inverter (VSI) designed for compensating the polluted waveform and the model with nonlinear load was made to run by each participants on their own. The session ended with a hands-on experience in designing active power filters.

Prof. N. Kumaresan, the counselor of IEEE SB Trichy, honored the external speaker Dr.P.Karuppanan with our institute memento. Prof. N. Kumaresan, thanked and appreciated Dr. Raja for coordinating and being an organizer and as well as a resource person for the event. Dr.Moorthy Assoc Professor, Department of EEE, NIT, Tiruchirappalli, appreciated for the way the event conducted, he wished and suggested to continue the same in all upcoming events. Certificates for the participants were distributed by the guest speaker and other dignitaries.
