NASSCOM DIRECTIVE
This is the letter addressed from the President of Nasscom to TP. They have given a similar suggestion to the IT/BPO companies.
Dear Sir/Madam,
During the last few years, the Indian IT Industry has been the largest recruiter in India and directly employs over two million people. Many of the leading IT firms have been recruiting significant numbers of students from your university / college over the past few years and will continue to do so in the future.
Given the increasing rate of growth of the industry and the high demand for engineers, the recruitment process uptil now has commenced from the 6th semester itself. We believe that in some institutions, the recruitment process gets started as early as in the 5th semester. This has resulted in students having a job offer on hand even though they still have over one year to complete their studies.
While this does give assurance to the passing out students, it also brings in certain degree of complacency among student and in some manner impacts the education process. It also inhibits student from taking up post-graduate studies which has its own cascading impact on quality of research in India. Some universities and colleges have shared concerns on the above lines with us.
From the Industry perspective as well, companies have to make an estimate of their requirements almost 18 - 24 months prior to their need. This worked well in past with some degree of certainty of growth but is increasingly difficult during current economic environment. In many cases, it has also led to joining dates of students getting staggered and deferred.
We have discussed this amongst our member companies and the consensus agreement is that the campus recruitment process should be rescheduled from the middle of the 8th semester or may be even towards the end of the 8th semester.
We would like to implement this from the 2009-10 academic sessions onwards. The industry and academia has worked in partnership and would appreciate your inputs and suggestions in implementing this. The industry fundamentals remain strong and IT/BPO industry will be large recruiter of fresh graduates. We are committed to the various industry academic initiatives.
We look forward to working with you.
Thanking you,
Yours faithfully,
Som Mittal
